AN ACT relating to public safety; requiring the Nevada Highway Patrol under certain circumstances to pay certain educational expenses for officers injured in the line of duty; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN

SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

1-1  Section 1. Chapter 480 of NRS is hereby amended by adding

1-2  thereto a new section to read as follows:

1-3  1.  To the extent of legislative appropriation, the Nevada

1-4  Highway Patrol shall pay:

1-5  (a) One hundred percent of the tuition charge, if any; and

1-6  (b) Fifty percent of all registration fees, laboratory fees and

1-7  expenses for required textbooks and course materials,

1-8  assessed against a qualified officer of the Nevada Highway Patrol

1-9  for classes taken at a school within the University and Community

1-10  College System of Nevada.

1-11      2.  For the purposes of this section, an officer of the Nevada

1-12  Highway Patrol is qualified if he is:

1-13      (a) Injured in the line of duty; and

1-14      (b) Eligible to apply for disability retirement pursuant to

1-15  NRS 286.620.


2-1  3.  The value to the officer of any benefits paid pursuant to

2-2  this section must not reduce any allowance or benefit that the

2-3  officer would otherwise receive, including, without limitation, any

2-4  retirement or other allowance paid pursuant to chapter 286 of

2-5  NRS or any accident benefit paid pursuant to chapter 616C of

2-6  NRS.

2-7  Sec. 2.  This act becomes effective on July 1, 2003.
