Prayer by the Chaplain, Lt. John Van Cleef.

All Mighty God, giver of all good things, we thank You for the natural majesty and beauty of this land.  We thank You for the resources of this great state.  We thank You for the men and women who have made and continue to make this state strong.  We thank You for the torch of liberty which has been lit in this land.  We thank You for the faith we have inherited in all of its rich glory.  Therefore, help us Lord, to finish the good work begun.  Strengthen our efforts to blot out ignorance and prejudice, and to abolish poverty and crime.  And we do continue to lift up, too, those who are absent and ill.  We lift up, too, again, Mr. Marvel and pray Your hand will be upon him and that You will bring healing and wholeness to his body.  And that You will comfort his wife.  We pray for Mr. Collins and ask that You will give him rest and relief as he recovers.  We pray for the families of those represented here that they will be strengthened in their loved ones absence.  We pray these things in the name of Your Son.                         Amen.

REMARKS FROM THE FLOOR

    Remarks by Assemblyman Hettrick.

Assemblyman Dini requested that the following remarks be entered in the Journal.

    Assemblyman Hettrick:

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.  As you know, our colleague Mr. Marvel is in a local hospital, gravely ill.  In fact, Mr. Speaker, he had major surgery less than 24 hours ago.  One week ago, Mr. Marvel uttered an ethnic slur during a committee hearing in this building.  A few minutes later, he publicly indicated that he did not intend to offend anyone with his unfortunate choice of words.  Today, a group has gathered in Reno to protest our colleague’s use of that ethnic slur and in support of the Hispanic community.

Mr. Speaker, you and I have known John Marvel for many years.  We know him to be honest and fair.  He is a man of integrity who has worked in these halls for every Nevadan—regardless of their ethnic background.  We also know him to be human—capable, as we all are, of making mistakes.

John Marvel is a man of character, willing to take responsibility for his actions and willing to make amends.  Until he is well enough to do that, in John’s behalf, I would offer a sincere personal apology and deepest regrets for a very unfortunate incident.

In closing, I would ask my colleagues and all Nevadans to pray for John’s complete recovery and quick return to this chamber.

Assemblyman Price requested that his remarks be entered in the Journal.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I would like to express my appreciation and I would like to see our body express an appreciation, by sending a letter to the Elko Daily Free Press, for furnishing us with newspapers every day.  I think in a state as large as ours, where we are dealing with issues that affect every corner of the state, some 450 miles away, it is commendable that a newspaper actually takes the time and the expense to furnish us with a copy of the paper so we can see what is going on in their area and get their opinions.  I think the Elko Daily Free Press should be recognized and I would suggest we show our appreciation for them.

GUESTS EXTENDED PRIVILEGE OF ASSEMBLY FLOOR

On request of Assemblywoman Angle, the privilege of the floor of the Assembly Chamber for this day was extended to Nan Nasbitt and Kelvin Probasco.

On request of Assemblyman Dini, the privilege of the floor of the Assembly Chamber for this day was extended to Sarah LaFrance, Leonard LaFrance and Richard Gomez.

Assemblyman Perkins moved that the Assembly adjourn until Monday February 15, 1999, at 11:00 a.m.

    Motion carried.

    Assembly adjourned at 11:46 a.m.
