    Senate Joint Resolution No. 4.

    Resolution read.

Remarks by Assemblymen Perkins, Gibbons and Bache.

Assemblyman Anderson requested that the following remarks be entered in the Journal.

    Assemblyman Perkins:

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.  It is a resolution, as you can read, that urges Congress not to enact the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1999.  That particular act sites the interim storage here in Nevada and it also revokes all the suitability measures that have been in place for Yucca Mountain, thus far.  So, any of the environmental impacts or other scientific reasons that Yucca Mountain may not be a suitable site are thus taken away by the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1999.  This resolution will just further proclaim Nevada’s opposition to that storage in our state.  Thank you.

    Assemblywoman Gibbons:

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.  House Bill 45, the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1999, causes me, and many of you, a lot of grief here in Nevada, particularly our children and our families.  I think it is important that people in Washington realize that we are people and that we care about the future of our state and the future of our children.  With 109 reactors around the country, storage sites that will be transferred to Nevada are such a great risk for other states.  Also, with the possibility of us being in a high earthquake area, it is important that we get those “pencil-necked geeks” up there to figure it out and not come here and light up our kids at night.  And that’s all I have to say.  Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

    Assemblyman Bache:

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.  Senate Joint Resolution No. 4 is consistent with what we did in the 1995 Legislative Session when we adopted Assembly Joint Resolution No. 26, I believe, where we urged Congress not to place nuclear waste either on an interim or long term storage basis in Nevada.  We encourage them to kill this act so that they can retain storage at the current facilities.  Thank you.

Roll call on Senate Joint Resolution No. 4:

    Yeas—41.

    Nays—None.

    Excused––Marvel.

Senate Joint Resolution No. 4 having received a constitutional majority, Mr. Speaker declared it passed, as amended.

Resolution ordered transmitted to the Senate.

Assemblyman Perkins moved that all rules be suspended and that the resolution be immediately transmitted to the Senate.

    Remarks by Assemblyman Perkins.

    Motion carried unanimously.
