AN ACT making an appropriation to the State Public Works Board for the remediation of the indoor air quality problem at the Southern Nevada Science Center; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

Whereas, The Southern Nevada Science Center was constructed with state money in 1992 in Las Vegas to provide working facilities for 125 of the faculty and staff of the Desert Research Institute; and
Whereas, From the beginning, the faculty and staff who worked in the Southern Nevada Science Center complained about air quality problems and at least one employee resigned because of her inability to work in the building; and
Whereas, In the spring of 1995 a large increase in complaints relating to the air quality in the building occurred, eight members of the faculty and staff were ordered out of the building by their physicians with the concurrence of the State Industrial Insurance Consultant Physician, and experts were recruited to investigate the problem; and
Whereas, As a result of the investigation of the problem, the State Public Works Board has included up to $397,643 in its proposed budget for Capital Improvement Project 97-S6 to pay the cost of cleaning the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system of the Southern Nevada Science Center; and
Whereas, This act would provide the appropriation requested by the State Public Works Board so that the problem at the Southern Nevada Science Center could be remedied as soon as possible to facilitate full and efficient use of the building and eliminate the need for costly replacement offices and other intermediate measures; now, therefore,

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
