AN ACT relating to district courts; increasing the number of judges in the eighth judicial district; increasing the number of the district judges that must be judges of the family court; requiring the family court of the eighth judicial district to maintain certain statistics; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1 Chapter 3 of NRS is hereby amended by adding thereto a new section to read as follows:
A family court located in any county whose population is 400,000 or more shall maintain statistics regarding the cases filed with the court each year, including, without limitation:
1. The average number of cases assigned to each judge;
2. The final disposition of each case;
3. The length of time from commencement to final resolution of each case; and
4. Information concerning each case involving child custody, including, without limitation, the gender of the person who was awarded custody in each such case.
Sec. 2 NRS 3.018 is hereby amended to read as follows:
3.018 For the eighth judicial district there must be [24] 27 district judges, [8] 11 of whom must be judges of the family court.
Sec. 3 The additional district judges required for the eighth judicial district who must be judges of the family court pursuant to section 1 of this act must be selected at the general election to be held on November 3, 1998, and shall take office on January 4, 1999. The terms of these judges expire on January 3, 2005.
Sec. 4 The provisions of subsection 1 of NRS 354.599 do not apply to any additional expenses of a local government that are related to the provisions of this act.
Sec. 5 1. This section and sections 1, 3 and 4 of this act become effective on October 1, 1997.
2. Section 2 of this act becomes effective on January 4, 1999.
