Program Description
Into English is a supplemental program for English Language Learners (ELL) at the elementary school level. The program develops academic language through a variety of grade level appropriate, content-based, thematic units, which teachers integrate for 20 - 40 minutes daily. Each lesson provides teachers with comprehensible components and multi-level teaching strategies to reach all levels of students, involving them in cooperative, participatory activities and enriching, content-based lessons.
This ELL program gives students access to the core curriculum through:
· Content-based instruction that builds academic language proficiency.
· Multi-level teaching strategies for all language levels.
· Authentic, accessible literature.
· Consistent, easy-to-teach lesson plans.
· Assessment that monitors growth across proficiency levels.
· Special teaching guidance for meeting the needs of newcomers.
Evidence of Effectiveness
Since the 1998-99 school year, the Jurupa Unified School District in California adopted and gradually implemented Into English in K-6 classrooms. Results of a pre- and post-test comparison show that ELL students made progress toward higher language proficiency levels as indicated in September through June (2000-01 school year) comparisons. The following shows the effect of Into English on assisting students in meeting state curriculum standards:
