The Research Division of the Legislative Counsel Bureau is the general information and service arm of the Legislature. It conducts research into a wide variety of subjects at the request of legislators, legislative committees, State and local officials, and the public. The Division also responds to inquiries concerning Nevada’s government, laws, and public policy issues from residents, legislative agencies, and public officials in other states. The Division is administered by the Research Director, a statutory officer appointed by the Director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau with the approval of the Legislative Commission. Most of the statutory duties of the Division and the Research Director are described in NRS 218F.800 and 218F.810.

The Division publishes research briefs, fact sheets, and policy and program reports about laws and programs in Nevada, prepares the Nevada Legislative Manual, and assists with decennial redistricting. The Research Library in the Division also provides assistance with compiling legislative histories of measures enacted by the Legislature and locating other legislative materials, as well as answering reference questions. Assistance for legislators with constituent concerns is also available through the Division’s Constituent Services Unit.

What we can do for the public

• Answer questions regarding Nevada’s legislative process.
• Assist in identifying your legislator.
• Assist in locating resources, including websites and government agencies, related to your research request.
• Assist in identifying past or current Nevada legislation and its legislative history.
• Suggest other local, state or federal government agencies or other organizations as sources of additional information.
• Direct you to resources that will help you learn how to do legislative research.

Pursuant to Nevada Revised Statutes 218F.150, the Division's employees are nonpartisan and are prohibited from opposing or urging legislation or certain policies or positions.  Employees of the Research Division also cannot provide legal advice.
